What Borehole Contractors Quote For

JobTypical scope
New boreholesDrilling, casing, development and a completion report for homes, farms and businesses
Surveys and sitingChoosing a drilling position from geology, nearby boreholes and geophysical readings
TestingYield tests for sustainable flow, and laboratory tests for water quality
Pumps and equippingSubmersible, solar and booster pumps, pipework, cabling and controls
Storage and treatmentTanks, stands, filtration, UV and pressure systems
Repairs and maintenanceFault finding, pump retrieval, servicing and borehole cleaning
Wellpoints and irrigationShallow groundwater points, garden and farm irrigation
DewateringLowering groundwater on building sites and waterlogged ground

Not every contractor does every job, so say exactly what you need when you request quotes.

How Borehole Installation Works

  1. Site check. The contractor looks at access for the rig, the position of septic tanks and services, and any municipal rules.
  2. Siting. A position is chosen from local knowledge, nearby boreholes or a geophysical survey.
  3. Drilling. The rig drills to water-bearing rock, and casing is installed where the hole could collapse.
  4. Yield test. The borehole is pumped and measured so the pump can be sized to what it can sustain.
  5. Equipping. Pump, rising main, cable, controls and pipework are fitted, often with a tank and pressure system.
  6. Water test. A laboratory test shows whether the water suits drinking, irrigation or other uses, and what treatment it needs.

Ask each contractor which of these steps their price covers, and in writing.

Types of Borehole Quote

  • Drilling only. Drilling and casing at a rate per metre, with the pump quoted later or by someone else.
  • Drill and equip. One contractor drills, tests and installs the pump system for a combined price.
  • Equip an existing hole. A pump, controls and pipework for a borehole that is already drilled.
  • Repair and service. Fault finding, pump work, cleaning and planned maintenance.

Borehole or Wellpoint

  • Borehole. Drilled by a rig, often 40 - 120 m deep, into fractured rock or deep aquifers. Suits household supply, farms and businesses.
  • Wellpoint. A shallow pipe jetted into sandy ground with a high water table, with a surface pump. Cheaper, but only works where the ground and water table allow, and usually suits garden watering.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African contractors, suppliers and quote websites, checked October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. Rates are lowest in parts of the Free State, Limpopo and Mpumalanga and highest on dolomite and hard rock in Gauteng and Cape Town. Confirm whether VAT is included on every quote.

What to Include in Your Request

  • Your town or suburb, and whether it is a home, smallholding, farm or business.
  • The service: new borehole, pump, repair, test, tank, filtration or irrigation.
  • For new drilling: what the water is for and roughly how much you need.
  • For existing boreholes: depth if known, pump type and what has gone wrong.
  • Rig access: gate width, slopes, walls and overhead cables.
  • Photos of the site or equipment, if the form lets you add them.

Availability

Requests come from across South Africa. Contractors are independent and decide which jobs and areas they take on, so availability depends on your location and the service you need.

Comparing Borehole Contractors

Whoever you consider, compare like with like:

  • Rate and depth. Price per metre, and the maximum depth you agree to before they stop and consult you.
  • Casing. Type, diameter and how many metres are included.
  • Dry hole terms. What you pay if there is no water or too little.
  • Testing. Whether a yield test and water quality test are included, and how long the yield test runs.
  • Equipment. Pump brand, size, controls, cable and pipe, and their warranties.
  • Payment. Deposit, balance, site establishment fees and whether VAT is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this service work?

You send one request with your town or suburb and the job. Independent borehole contractors that take on that kind of work contact you and quote. You compare and choose, or appoint nobody.

Does it cost anything?

No. Requesting quotes is free and there is no obligation. You pay the contractor you appoint, on their terms.

Are you a drilling company?

No. We do not own rigs, employ drillers or install pumps. Independent contractors survey, drill, equip, test and repair.

How much does a borehole cost in South Africa?

Published 2026 guides put drilling alone at roughly R300 - R750 per metre in most cities, and a drilled, cased and equipped domestic borehole at roughly R60,000 - R120,000. Depth, geology and equipment move the price. See the price table on this page.

Is water guaranteed?

No. Nobody can guarantee water, yield or quality before drilling. A survey improves the odds, and the quote should say what you pay if the hole is dry or low-yielding.

Do I need permission to drill?

It depends on where you live and how you will use the water. Reasonable domestic use falls under Schedule 1 of the National Water Act and does not need registration with the Department of Water and Sanitation, but some municipalities require an application or registration before or after drilling. Use beyond Schedule 1 falls under a general authorisation, which may need registration above set volumes, or a licence.

Borehole Installation South Africa is a free quote-comparison service. Work is carried out by independent contractors, and your agreement is with the contractor you appoint. Ask each one for a written quote, what is and is not included, the dry-hole terms and the guarantees on workmanship and equipment before you pay a deposit.
