Wellpoint Installation

Get the best quote
Leaderr approved Wellpoint Installation - contractor crew with pipes and equipment on a residential property where groundwater is being tapped

Wellpoint Installation taps shallow groundwater with a pipe jetted into sandy ground, connected to a surface pump. It is a low-cost way to water a garden where the water table is high and the soil is sandy. It is not a drilled borehole and will not work on every property.

  • Say whether neighbours have working wellpoints.
  • Describe the soil if you know it: sand, clay or rock.
  • Say what you want to water.

Describe your property once and compare wellpoint installation quotes.

Where Wellpoints Work

  • Sandy soils with groundwater within a few metres of the surface.
  • Coastal plains, river valleys and some low-lying suburbs in several provinces.
  • Not in clay, solid rock or where the water table is deep. A drilled borehole is needed there.

What the Installation Includes

  • Jetting one or more points with water pressure.
  • A self-priming surface pump, often 0.75 - 1.5 kW.
  • Non-return valve, suction line and an outlet or garden tap connection.

Usually extra: extra points, electrical supply to the pump, a pump cover, irrigation and a pressure controller.

Rules to Check

Garden watering on your own property usually falls under Schedule 1 of the National Water Act, but municipal rules differ. The City of Cape Town asks residents to apply at least 14 days before sinking a wellpoint and to register it. Check your municipality.

The Wellpoint Installation Process

  1. Site check. The installer judges soil and water table, often from neighbouring points.
  2. Jetting. A pipe is jetted down until it reaches water.
  3. Pump connection. The pump is mounted, primed and tested.
  4. Handover. Flow is checked and you are shown how to re-prime the pump.

Questions to Ask Installers

  • What pump size and brand, and what warranty?
  • Will the water stain paving or walls? Iron-rich water often does.

Wellpoint Installation FAQs

Wellpoint or borehole?

A wellpoint is cheaper but only works in sandy ground with shallow water, and usually supplies less. A borehole reaches deeper water in rock.

Can I drink wellpoint water?

Treat it as not drinkable unless a laboratory test shows otherwise. Shallow water is more exposed to contamination.

Why does wellpoint water stain?

Iron and manganese in shallow groundwater can leave brown or black marks. Filtration can help.

Do wellpoints only work in the Western Cape?

No. They work wherever sandy soil and a shallow water table occur, in any province, and fail where they do not. Neighbouring wellpoints are the best local guide.

How long do wellpoints last?

Many last years. Points can clog with fine sand, and pumps need occasional repair.
